Residents to stage protest against Croke Park concerts       printable version
03 Jul 2014: posted by the editor - Entertainment, Music, Ireland

The residents of the Croke Park area of Dublin held a public meeting 'Stop the Croke Park Concert Madness' on Tuesday, 1 July and reiterated their position that there should be three concerts in any calendar year in Croke Park This is in accordance with the planning permission for the stadium. Three concerts have already taken place in 2014 when One Direction played in May and residents now plan a public protest on Monday, 7 July.

In reaction to Dublin City Council's decision to grant a public event licence for three additional concerts over and above the accepted limit of three, local resident Colm Stephens, who chaired the residents' meeting said: "While we welcome the decision by Dublin City Council to refuse a licence for two concerts, the residents in the Croke Park area have always maintained that three a year is more than enough. The reasons given by the Council in disallowing the fourth and fifth Garth Brooks concerts are equally valid for the first three as well."

He continued: "For decades the residents have been promised by the GAA that Croke Park would consult with us before any such events are announced. This was not the case on this as well as many other occasions. Local residents are delighted that DCC has respected their view and accepted the issues raised in their objections in order 'to minimize disruption to the neighbourhood in which the concerts were to take place'. If we had real consultation and genuine engagement we could have avoided last minute decisions like this."

The residents have now called a protest for Monday, 7 July at 5 pm outside City Hall before the next meeting of the Dublin City Council. They call on the Lord Mayor, Christy Burke and the elected councilors to call the City Manager to account for the decision not to hold a public hearing into the event licence application before a decision was made by the unelected council officials.
