Ian Tomlinson - the unsurprising criminal court verdict
Thu 19 Jul 2012 08:33 pm filed by the Editor - Opinion

That the police officer charged with the murder of Ian Tomlinson was acquitted by a criminal court in London should surprise no-one. Back in the early 1980s, the author of this item presented a court with incontrovertible and unarguable evidence of police corruption at a division that went from low to senior ranks.

A dossier of over 60 pages of evidence, which included phgotographs and evidence taken from police files, was presented to a trial judge.

Instead of acting on the issues, the trial was halted on the pretext of a juror 'going on holiday', a new jury sworn it at a reconstitued trial some weeks later and the documented evidence never again resurfaced. The documentation presented to the judge simply vanished.

At the reconstitued trial, one of the officers involved in the corruption was found to be reading from a blank notebook after he asked the court for permission to read and quote from his notes.

No action was taken against the officer concerned.
