New TechSpace as Gaeilge scheme announced
30 Oct 2015: posted by the editor - Ireland

A new scheme is under way to assist youth organisations and schools who are running TechSpace as Gaeilge to purchase digital media equipment.

Under the scheme, announced this week by Gaeltacht Affairs Minister Joe McHugh, a maximum grant of €2,000 will be available for eligible applicants to purchase digital media equipment and to cover travel and subsistence costs up to a maximum of €300 to attend Techspace as Gaeilge training courses.

Techspace, which is a Camara Ireland Limited project, acts as a national network of digital media spaces in youth organisations and schools to help young people actively create digital and technological content.  The Minister of State approved a grant earlier this year to have online training material translated into Irish and to organise training courses for those interested in establishing a TechSpace as Gaeilge.

Announcing the new grant scheme today, the Minister of State said, "I am delighted that this new scheme has been established to further develop the Techspace as Gaeilge project. This is an innovative project that supports both the Irish language and technology. It is important to give young people every encouragement to develop their technology skills as much as possible and it is also vital that we ensure that they have the opportunity to do so in Irish."

Techspace as Gaeilge intends to organise another course in November to accommodate, in particular, the training demands of Gaelcholáistí and Gaeltacht secondary schools, in addition to summer colleges throughout the country.  Expressions of interest in this course should be sent to fiona.mcdonnell@techspace.ie.

Application forms for the new scheme are available from the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht and applications will be accepted from schools or youth organisations who have participants on TechSpace as Gaeilge training courses.  http://www.ahg.gov.ie/app/uploads/2015/10/foirm-iarratais-agus-coinniollacha-profail-deanta-ag-r-aistriuchain-ar-an-leagana-seo.docx

This project is being funded under the 20-Year Strategy for the Irish Language 2010-2030.
