Amersfoort, 7 December 2015
The Opéra national de Paris is to perform a new production of La Damnation de Faust by Berlioz, also known as a légende dramatique. The performance has been inspired by Mars One and its astronaut candidates.

“Mars One is extremely proud that the Paris Opera has chosen to use Mars One’s story so prominently in their production,” said Bas Lansdorp, CEO and co-founder of Mars One. “Mars will be mankind’s first home away from Earth. That step is not only about science and technology but also about the arts, which this partnership illustrates beautifully.”

The director, Alvis Hermanis, sought a contemporary figure in which he could transpose the myth of La Damnation de Faust and give it a modern touch. It was Stephen Hawking, the genius scientist, in which Hermanis immediately saw the ‘Faust twenty-first century’. Stephen Hawking has often argued in favor of manned missions into the solar system. For the manned  mission, Hermanis was inspired by Mars One: he saw this project as the most contemporary expression of this extreme dream, which, since Antiquity, incites human beings to leave their earthly life.

The Paris Opera has also used material from NASA, the European Space Agency, and others to create a film about the wonders of our world that will be shown in the architecture surrounding the play. This film enhances the opera and takes the audience on a fantastic journey.

The show will play from the 5th of December until the 29th of December 2015 in l’Opera Bastille. The official première is on the 8th of December.
