Collaborative project launched to benefit Roma children at Lunik IX, Slovakia
13 Oct 2012: posted by the editor - Europe, United Kingdom, Czech/Slovakia

A UK and a Slovakian photographer have launched a collaborative project involving Roma children at Lunik IX, Slovakia— Europe's largest Roma Community.

UK photographer Julia C Johnson said: "Few are aware of the dire conditions that Roma youths experience at Lunik IX, Slovakia. Myself and Roma photographer and film maker, Artur Conka, need your help to support this project.

"Through teaching these youths photography, continuing our own documentation and exhibiting the collaborative photographic project in London in 2013, we will create interest in and financial support for the children of Lunik IX. The images these Roma youths produce will challenge negative representations of them, giving them the opportunity to document their own culture.

"The project will involve the Roma children there. We intend to teach the Roma children photography and develop a body of work with them that addresses the issues the community face, with regards to health and education. We wish to exhibit the work in London next year in order to generate financial support for the community. The team (Roma, Slovakian Photographer, Artur Conka and myself) are looking for funds currently. The funding page is here:
