Interested in pursuing a Master of Arts in Media Studies with an emphasis on screenwriting?

If so, then Dr. Susan Liddy of the Department of Media and Communications in Mary Immaculate College in Limerick would like to talk with you.

Dr Liddy says there are two possibilities: students can  look at screenwriting in terms of feature films, shorts and television drama. Topics covered include structure, character development, dialogue, three act structure, alternatives to traditional structure, emotional impact and the process of rewriting. Screenwriting as a growing academic discipline is also explores and current research areas are reviewed. The Irish and international film industry and the production context will also be examined.

When it comes to students choosing a dissertation topic there are two options that may be of particular interest to writers. Students who have a strong idea for a feature may be interested in considering writing a feature film script as the major part of their dissertation. This would be accompanied by a literature review and an in depth reflexive essay analyzing the writing journey.

Other dissertation possibilities include work on the Film Industry from the perspective of screenwriters; an analysis of the work of a specific writer/writers or perhaps an exploration of aspects of the Irish Film Industry or Irish Film Board. There are many possibilities that may be of particular interest to those with a writing background or who have a keen interest in this area. It is possible to accommodate those students who want a hand-on writing experience and those who prefer to approach it from a research perspective.

Susan would be happy to chat informally to anyone who might be interested in the course or who would just like more information. She can be emailed in the first instance at: Susan.liddy@mic.ul.ie
