Britain's economic recovery Ireland's opportunity
27 Jul 2014: posted by the editor - Ireland, Fine Gael

Irish exporters are being urged to capitalise on Britain's economic recovery.

Fine Gael MEP for Dublin, Brian Hayes, has urged Irish export companies and the export sector to take advantage of the economic recovery taking place in Britain. The British economy grew by 0.8% in the second quarter of 2014 and figures indicate that the British economy will be one of the fastest growing economies in the developed world this year.

"The British recovery from the Great Recession has begun to accelerate and a clear opportunity now exists for Ireland to capitalise on this. The time is right for a major promotion and marketing campaign by Irish companies exporting to Britain. Now is the time to gain market share in an expanding British economy.

"The opportunity for Irish exporters is further enhanced by a very favourable Euro/Sterling exchange rate. Significantly the Euro is now trading below 80p sterling which makes Irish exports even more competitive. A strong recovery in Britain and a favourable exchange rate is a very special combination. We must seize the opportunity which now presents itself.

"A competitive Euro/Sterling exchange rate is also good for British tourists coming to Ireland. British people like a bargain and an opportunity now exists for the Irish tourism to recover lost market share in Britain.

"A high powered promotion campaign based around the slogan, 'Your pound goes further in Ireland' and highlighting the value for money to be had in Ireland, could drive a strong recovery in British tourist numbers."

"The British market is a key market for small Irish exporting companies. Irish companies which have a clear focus on the British market will benefit from a recovery which is now solid and broad based."
