5000 rally against gangland violence

5000 rally in Limerick against gangland violence
Monday, 11 May, 2009

About 5000 people took to the streets of Limerick City on Sunday in a show of solidarity with the father of murdered businessman Roy Collins, who was shot by gangland killers, and other innocent victims of gangland crime.

35-year-old father of two Roy Collins was shot dead at his family-run gaming arcade at Roxboro Shopping Centre last month in a gangland reprisal after relatives of Mr Collins gave evidence in a criminal trial that resulted in a jail sentence for one of the defendants in the case.

An estimated 5000 people marched from Perry Square and through the city centre to City Hall, where they held a minute's silence.

Following a haunting melody from a solitary Eilean piper, the crowd was addressed firstly by Limerick mayor John Gilligan and then by Roy's father, Steve Collins, who had led the march through the city.

Mr Gilligan said that enough was enough and promised not to quit pressing for legislation to enable the gardai to more effectively tackle the gang wars.

Mr Gilligan said he had just one word for the people he called callous killers. "That word is goodbye," he told the crowd to applause, rounding off with an angry exclamation that he hoped the gardai would send a patrol car around to the gangsters to pass on the message "loud and clear".

In an emotional address, Mr Collins thanked all who had attended the march and said he considered it was time that the government enacted interrnment for those involved in violent gangland lifestyles.

Minister for Defence Willie O'Dea, who did not address the rally, said afterwards that a new package of anti-crime measures deal ingwith issues like the gathering of evidence, investigation methods and methods of trial would be put before the cabinet by the Minister for Justice on Tuesday.
