€360,000 For Dublin’s Northside Community Law Centre
The Minister for Social Affairs, Séamus Brennan T.D. today (Friday, 29th April) announced that he has approved funding of €360,000 for the Northside Community Law Centre (NCLC) in Dublin for 2005.

The allocation represents an increase of nearly 70% on the support funding of €215,000 provided in 2004 and guarantees that the work of the Law Centre can continue without interruption or financial difficulties in 2005.

Minister Brennan announced the increased funding allocation following a meeting he had called with a delegation from the Law Centre and public representatives from the Northside area to discuss funding arrangements for the NCLC in 2005 in light of concerns that it may have difficulty continuing services until the end of the year. Minister Brennan said the increased funding was being approved on condition that between now and December regular meetings would be held between officials from the Department of Social Affairs and NCLC at which all the options for future funding would be examined and a long-term strategy for the financing of the Law Centre worked-out in consultation with other Government departments. The regular discussions would also deal with administrative, debt issues and services issues.

Minister Brennan said: "The Northside Community Law Centre has provided a valuable service to the community in this area of Dublin for over 30 years. Over those decades and today it continues to be a beacon of hope and a place of practical support for a great many people who find themselves in difficulties and cannot afford the legal costs involved. Increasing the funding to €360,000 lifts the uncertainty over the immediate future of the Centre and allows for a breathing space between now and the end of the year during which a solid, long-term strategy can be assembled that will ensure the NCLC can continue its valuable work into the future."

Parents Action Cork
All over West Cork parents of special needs children along with their teachers and principals in the mainstream schools face an ever-increasing annual battle with the Department of Education to provide the necessary resources in order to give their children the best possible chance in the education system. It is now almost the norm for concerned adults to engage in lengthy battles with the department each summer, as they beg and plea for Special Needs Assistants to be put in place at the beginning of the school year in September. It can be an extremely worrying and testing time, particularly for parents as they face the uncertainty of having a dedicated classroom assistant to help their children at school. For school principals and teachers generally, it is more often than not, a time of extreme frustration also, as they are unaware of what extra challenges face them, and if the necessary resources will be made available from government to employ classroom assistants. Now, parents in the West Cork area have formed the West Cork Parents Action Group, to put the pressure on in a united and co-ordinated front, rather than as dozens of individual cases fighting their own battles. The group has organised a public meeting for 8.00pm in the Parkway Hotel, Dunmanway of next Thursday 21st April, and they encourage and invite parents of special needs children in mainstream schools, as well as principals, teachers and anyone else concerned about this issue to come along to discuss their concerns and show support for their cause. City Council rule incineration out of City development Plan
Sinn Féin Dublin spokesperson on Environment and Representative for Dublin South East, Cllr. Daithí Doolan, has expressed his delight that Dublin City Council has voted to exclude incineration from the City Development Plan.

Speaking after the debate in City Hal, Cllr. Doolan said: “Tonight's vote, in support of my motion, received cross party support and has sent a loud and clear message to the Minister for Environment, Dublin will not accept incineration. Our communities and the people we represent will not be bullied by faceless bureaucrats. Our mandate must be respected.

“Nobody doubts this city faces a waste crisis. This motion will now allow us to put in place a comprehensive waste management plan that actually tackles the waste crisis this city faces. Sinn Féin will continue to campaign for the adoption of a Zero Waste Strategy which aims to reduce, reuse and recycle our waste.”

In conclusion Cllr. Doolan demanded that the city management and government ministers listen to those of us who have a mandate to run this city and act accordingly.
