Frank McCourt, Angelas Ashes and the rest
It didnt happen like that. It wasnt like that for McCourt, neither was it like that for anyone else in Limerick.
That was, and still is, the outspoken reaction to Angelas Ashes from many people in Limerick, upset about the portrayal of poverty, hardship and the indifference encountered and remembered by Frank McCourt from his younger days in growing up in Limerick Citys lanes. Indeed, some local people have even gone on the campaign trail to rubbish McCourts recollections and his book.
Speaking on Sunday, 21 September 2003 on Irish television, where he was a guest choosing his favourite hymns for a Sunday religious broadcast, Mr McCourt said he could understand the hostility to what he wrote.
Its just the pride of Limerick, the best selling author told the programme presenter.
Indeed it is difficult to imagine how Mr McCourt, while working as a teacher in New York and writing his first novel Angelas Ashes, would have sat and deliberately falsified his recollections of his youth. There was no indication at the time that his novel would ever become of interest, would ever sell, let alone become a best seller.
Given the obscurity of the writer at the time, who could only then be said to be an aspiring author, the falsification of past memories becomes ludicrous. Quite simply, by falsifying such memories, McCourt had nothing to gain and everything to lose.
It cannot be denied that some people will always prefer to turn away from certain truths that they might prefer not to face, confront, or even accept.
Mr McCourt saw what he saw, and remembered what he remembered as he remembered it. It is an act of ignorance for others to dismiss his life experiences simply because they choose not to like what he says. There is a well coined local phrase in Limerick for such people. They are called begrudgers.
Mr McCourts memories go back across the decades to the 1930s and the 1940s. The recollections of the author of this article, a newsman with 40 years experience in journalism from a freelance to a staffer and also the webmaster of a now defunct Angela's Ashes related site, go back through 15 years of living in Limerick City centre.
As a journalist, I am trained to observe and note. Whether anyone chooses to accept or reject what I see and note matters little to me. I simply do my job. If others choose to reject my observations and comments, it is only themselves who subsequently fail to benefit from them. As is the same for those speaking of McCourt’s own observations

Read about the CD - made in Limerick
The first national newspaper articles about this CD appeared in papers enjoying world-wide circulation. The article referred readers to a web location where the CD could be purchased.
Unfortunately, problems prevented the web site going up in time to coincide with the published articlesin fact it didn't appear on the Internet until almost 18 months after the first article about the CD was published. How many hits the non-existent web site 'missed' is anybody's guess.
The CD is available on-line through www.limerick.com.
Songs From The Ashes is still to reach the wider acclaim this writer believes it richly deserves. It is a timeless piece and has the makings of a classic which anyone with Irish links would be proud to own, but more so those who have seen the movie or read Angela's Ashes. Given Frank McCourt's endorsement, the CD has now has become part of the Angela's Ashes story itself.
The CD was recorded by specially formed Limerick band Burning Embers, consisting of vocalist Vincent Fitzgerald, Jim Hanley on keyboards, Nigel Nix and Mike Moriarty on guitars, with backing vocals by Jenny McMahon. Author McCourt wrote a letter of glowing tribute after hearing the songs.
He wrote: "I can only tell you how moved I was that you undertook and completed such a demanding project. My wife Ellen and I just scratch our heads in wonder." He also included a personal thanks to all involved in making the CD, which is dedicated to a former Mayor of Limerick, the late Jim Kemmy, of whom McCourt also wrote of as a "man I love above all others...".
The CD stands above the original sound track of the movie for one compelling reason - all who compiled it live and walk in the same streets as once did the young McCourt. They are familiar with the intricacies of Limerick and with all of its varied faces.
Limerick poet John Liddy collaborated with the band to include a special song dedicated to Mr Kemmy, who died suddenly in 1998 while in office as mayor of Limerick.
The song is a tribute to the memory of former master stonemason and Garryowen man Jim Kemmy - "a man of steel and stone", - sung with warmth and true grit by vocalist Vincent Fitzgerald.
Desmond O'Grady, another very well known Irish poet wrote the following tribute to the CD:
Desmond O'Grady |
"These songs are from the open book of life from imaginative childhood to adult success.
"They sing of the poor but proud people from the lanes and alleyways of cities and towns all over the world. They sing with feeling of the blood, sweat and tears of birth, poverty and death; of emigration in hope of fame and fortune and of homesickness in foreign countries, of love of origins left behind, with memories of childhood, homeland and companions of the past".
Desmond O'Grady left Limerick bound for England with the then also unknown Richard Harris. Both lived rough on London's streets for some time before finding their different footings, O’Grady as a poet and the late Richard Harris as an actor..
This is an album containing a classic collection of songs that has the makings of a classic in its own right.
Below are some other reviews given to the CD.
"I couldn't get enough of it. I thought the book was good but I really only appreciated it after hearing this magnificent CD." Jim Liddane, International Songwriters Association.
"An excellent work. Adds depth to the book. I really enjoyed it." Tommy Swarbrig, songwriter and producer.
