IMF - They Call It Democracy

“It’s not hard to bring out the worst in large numbers of citizens by constantly pressing their buttons; fear, hate, greed, false pride and blind loyalty are the main emotions used to manipulate people so much these last years. Reversing this process and empowering people through courage, love, generosity, humility and critical thinking is harder but it can and must be done.” -- Coleen Rowley for RootsAction; FBI whistle blower

A Signatory — or not?
Nations that enlist as signatories to uphold and abide by the International Court of Justice but then decline to support and follow judgements and arrest warrants issued by the Court should be expelled as signatories without exception.

A Word of Advice to those who need to hear.
If you have not studied the world history of humanity with an unbiased view then you will not know that past civilisations that collapsed did so because they were:

  • invaded by an aggressive force

or

  • they lacked empathy and compassion

Civilisation as we know it today now stands on the brink.

Gaza, Palestine and Israel       printable version
21 Jan 2025: posted by the editor - Opinion

Many in countries of the world should hang their heads in shame and disgrace for their doublespeak and action regarding the war against Gaza and it occupants.

For war against Gaza it surely was - the horrific images of the utter destruction wreaked by the Israeli military, the targetting of civilians and media staff, the denial of aid, the forced displacement of an entire people and much, much more is testimonial to the genocide that took place.

Now that a preliminary ceasefire is in place, let us not forget two things amidst the unecessary losses of life, the disabling injuries of so many and the loss of homes of almost an entire population, and the uncertainties of the future for the region.

  • Why did this savage chain of events explode across Gaza after the Hamas attack on Israel? To fully understand requires a detailed and impartial study of the long term history of the region - looking decades before the creation of the modern-day state of Israel.
  • There are those who must now be held fully accountable for acknowledged and independently verified breaches of international law and this must be pursued.

Australia must not become complacent to China's aggression in the South China Sea

Last week, Chinese coast guard vessels rammed and shot water cannon at Philippine ships in the South China Sea. The incident was well within the Philippines' exclusive economic zone and was completely unprovoked.

It is the latest example of a sustained pattern of Chinese maritime coercion that h

For a small frog, the alpine tree frog (Litoria verreauxii alpina) packs a lot of surprises.

For one, this tree frog lives in snowy gullies and high mountain crags across the Australian Alps, far from the tropical areas we normally associate with tree frogs.

But these frogs have another surprise. Their numbers have been decimated by a deadly fungal disease, chytridiomycosis, which spreads in wate

Being monitored at work? A new report calls for tougher workplace surveillance controls

Australian employers are monitoring employees, frequently without workers' knowledge or consent, according to a new report.

And when workers do know about surveillance, there is little they can do about it. Laws have not kept pace, producing negative impacts for workers and workplaces.

A Labor-chaired Victorian parliamentary inquiry has released a 'Not a saint': Florence Nightingale, heroic founder of modern nursing, is humanised in a new novel

Florence Nightingale is often described as the founder of modern nursing. She was immortalised in Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's 1857 poem, Santa Filomena: "A noble type of good / Heroic Womanhood." For over a century, she has been remembered as "the lady with the lamp", moving through the wards of war hospitals.

'Chaotic, sometimes dangerous places' - why successful rehab for prisoners on remand will be hard to achieve

Last week's budget allocated NZ$472 million in new funding to deal with a growing prison population caused by greater use of prison remand and proposals to increase prison sentence lengths.

The new funding comes on top of $78 million provided in the 2024 budget to extend rehabilitation to remand prisoners, enabled by an

Australia could tax Google, Facebook and other tech giants with a digital services tax - but don't hold your breath

Tech giants like Google, Facebook and Netflix make billions of dollars from Australian users every year. But most of those profits are not taxed here.

To address this tax gap, some countries have introduced a new kind of tax called the digital services tax, or DST. It applies to revenue earned from users in a country, even if the company has no physical operations there. Some European Union member countries, the

One couple, two apartments, different surnames for the children: how 'two places to stay' is shaping families in China

During fieldwork in cities in China I came across a new marital practice, locally described as liang-tou-dun, literally "two places to stay".

A bride and groom, each an only child of their respective family, receive from each set of parents a wedding apartment. The young couple thus has two marriage apartments which they may occupy at different times.

James Bradley's thrilling, unsettling crime novel is set in a flooded Sydney in 2050

James Bradley is a brilliant writer of fiction, nonfiction and poetry. His recent book Deep Water (2024) is an elegiac essay in response to the wonders of the planet's oceans.                                                      Origins of Poverty
When man came on earth he did not live in a society or hierarchy nor was he endowed with poverty. Good health, longevity, natural cheerfulness were his own even as he found himself amidst plenty. Like other species he lived or perished as the external resources permitted but he lived or perished as a group. Only when the society organised itself into a hierarchy, it was possible for one layer to exist while another persisted during times of scarcity. Organised ways of living, knowledge of all descriptions, systems created for comfort etc. interfered with the natural living of MAN in hundreds of ways. With the passing of time these stratifications of society come to stay and even create a psychology by which even the victim takes his victimization for granted. No question arises in his mind. ...

Had not the society organised itself in such a way that segments of it are protected and other segments were defenseless, MAN would have remained as MAN and would not have been bifurcated into poor and rich.
