AN UNENLIGHTENED OMISSION?
Ironbridge, Shropshire, UK, and the first single span cast iron bridge in the world, built in 1779 in the heartlands of the industrial revolution and still standing today. Until the early 1960s—nearly 200 years later—it still carried mechanical traffic including buses before it was pedestrianised for preservation.

The Ironbridge bridge was built at nearby Coalbrookdale by Abraham Darby, the grandson of Abraham Darby (1677–1717), a member of the Quaker family of Coalbrookdale and who paved the way for the industrial revolution by developing iron metallurgy.

Bridges were also made for export at nearby Horsehay, including the bridge spanning Victoria Falls. One of the most prominent areas of industrial invention and development in the modern world, the region has a fascinating history second to none. Much of it has been removed and preserved at Blists Hill open air museum.

Given such a prominent feature of the development of the western world and specifically Europe, it is indeed odd that the Ironbridge was not included on the new euro notes.
