Richard
Harris inspires dedication on Limerick CD
A Limerick band, Burning Embers, have just released a new album dedicated
to the memory of Richard Harris. The album titled Sarsfields
Children is on sale in local shops and on the Internet.
As the title suggests the CD contains a series of songs
written about Limerick people some famous and some not. This is the
second album from the band, their previous offering was a collection
inspired by Frank Mc Courts book Angelas Ashes, called Songs
From The Ashes and is still selling well. The new album was conceived
after the success of Ashes and contains songs dedicated
to the likes of Richard Harris, Tom and Paschal, Michael Hogan- the
bard of Thomond, Jim Kemmy, Frank Mc Court and others.
The album, which took over three years to complete, is
dedicated to local boy made good, actor Richard Harris. A special song
on the album called A Man Called Harris was recorded shortly
before the actor died and had already been sent to his London address
for his comments, however, he took ill shortly after and died. Local
man and friend of the former actor Dermot Kelly, father of co author
of the song Sean Kelly, presented a copy of the song to Harriss
son at the memorial service in London last year and he expressed his
delights that his father was being honored in such a way.
Sarsfields Children also contains a
poignant tribute to Alan and Jeffrey Roche whos suicide was instrumental
in setting up the Aljeff Treatment Center for drug rehabilitation. It
was written after their brother, Tommy Roche, appeared on the Late Late
Show and told their story. Later singer Sinead OConnor got involved
in fund raising for the center.
Speaking about the album this week band members and songwriters
for the group Dominic Taylor and Sean Kelly said they expect the album
to be very popular with Limerick exiles and they would like to think
that their efforts in producing the album would be seen as a contribution
to the cultural life of the city.
