The World at the Cross-roads
Once again the world finds itself at an uncertain cross-roads and again the great religious beliefs are traceable at the source.
This time it is Islamic fundamentalism and western beliefs that are going to have to firmly face up not only to each other but also to a wider, more encompassing perspective. Until mankind recognises and worships the god within each individual then the beast of mayhem is given free rein to roam.
Much has been said about the need to draw back from the blaming of any particular sect and the need for understanding to prevail. Much needs to continue being said about the atrocities carried out all over the world in the name of 'religion'.
Christianity and the Islamic religions both have the blood of the past on their hands. Religion can become a false god that is by itself responsible for the pursuit of objectives that we all despise. It was not so long ago that Islamic fundamentalists pronounced a death sentence upon Salman Rushdi for 'crimes against the Islamic belief'.
Likewise Christianity has murdered heretics and those it considered had committed some crime against religious 'law' - most notably the figure of Christ, Christianity's founder. Where any such action is condoned in the name of any religion then that religion can only be flawed.
Furthermore, where any religion or religious belief is founded upon its feelings of superiority then a divide is immediately created. There is no possibility that tomorrow and no certainty that at any time will the human race fall under the umbrella of a single religion, so we must manage and live with what exists.
Only time will reveal if we are up to the challenge.
