Happy Birthday Clonakilty Fairtrade Town
Next Wednesday, (22nd September) marks the first anniversary since Clonakilty was declared Ireland's First Fairtrade Town. One year on, it still remains the only FT Town in the 32 counties, although there are 22 other communities striving hard to make it.

The Clonakilty FT Steering Group will be marking the first anniversary at 8.30pm in O' Donovan's Hotel on Wednesday, and the committee extends an open invitation to all interested people to come along.

Achieving Fairtrade Town Status for Clonakilty 12 months ago was a huge achievement for the town, and something that it has been credited with throughout the country.

They thank everyone who continue to make sure that FT brands continue to be available and purchased and consumed in Clonakilty, in particular the business people and customers who continue to demand them.

The FT status that Clonakilty has earned, has meant a lot of positive publicity for the town in the national and local media, where people really admire the caring attitude that we have for Third World Producers of produce such as teas, coffees, bananas, fruits, etc.

Singing Club To Celebrate 30 Years
Clonakilty Singing Club was founded in 1974 by a group of people interested in putting on stage musicals in the town. Over the subsequent three decades, the club has provided entertainment to young and old alike with the staging of over 25 popular musicals. On Friday 15th October, the club will celebrate it's 30th birthday beginning with a special Mass to remember the contribution of deceased members over the years. This will be followed by "a party"at The Venue, O' Donovan's Hotel where entertainer Ronnie Costley will sing from the musicals and a light buffet will be served. The club hopes that all past members and associates will be able to gather to celebrate, remember and reminisce on their shows, their characters and of course the music on this special night.

Car Free Day In Clon
(Wednesday 22nd Sept) Clonakilty is the only town in Co. Cork participating in this year's European Car Free Day initiative next Wednesday 22nd September. The Town Council set up a special sub-committee two months ago to promote the concept amongst the public, whereby commuters to workplaces, schools, etc. will be encouraged to think about unnecessary car use on that and subsequent days. In particular, people are being encouraged where practical to let the car at home and use alternative means of transport on Wednesday—walking, cycling, public transport, etc.

Where it's not practical, individuals are being asked to consider 'car pooling', whereby people from the same estates, streets or rural areas would organise with neighbours to share one car amongst several people rather than everyone taking a car each into town.

The business people in Clonakilty town centre are fully behind the Car Free Day, and will be encouraging workers in the town to use the public car parks (at Deasy's, the G.A.A. and Community College) that day, rather than clogging up residential areas near the town centre. Everyone who participates in the initiative will be entered into a draw that could win them a free lunch voucher to the value of €15. There will be a total of 10 vouchers to be won for people who park in the above-mentioned car parks from 8.30—10.00am.

The organisers of Clonakilty Car Free Day stress that there will be no street closures on the 22nd, and they hope that everyone will enter into the spirit of the day in a positive light. More importantly, it's hoped that it will not become a 'token effort' and that drivers may put their new good habits into daily practice every day of the year, not just on Car Free Day!

Clonakilty group continue post office closure protests
Seven members of the Clonakilty Post Office Action Group participated in a peaceful and dignified protest at the Fianna Fail meeting in Inchydoney from 3.30 - 6.30pm on Monday afternoon. Included were Jim L. O' Sullivan, Gobnait O' Donovan, Shane Minogue, Jennifer Sleeman, and town councillors Paul Hayes, Anthony McDermott and Cionnaith Ó Súilleabháin.

They carried three 8' x 4' signs, (two of which used to be at the entrances to the town), which had the direct slogan on them - "Hands Off Our Post Office".

The campaigners stood near the entrance to the hotel, where delegates at the meeting, as well as passing motorists, were able to clearly read the signs.

The group received a very positive reaction from the general public, many of whom came to see if they spotted Bertie Ahern or other cabinet members.

In the course of the afternoon, up to a dozen Fianna Fail parliamentarians, including Foreign Affairs Minister Brian Cowen, approached the picket, and listened to what the Action Group members had to say. Each was presented with one of the special Clonakilty Post office Postcards.

Many appeared genuinely interested, in particular deputies from rural constituencies, where the post office network has been deteriorating for many years.

Afterwards, a few of the Action Group members made it their business to speak with the delegates who were out enjoying the sun in front of the hotel. Shane Minogue was fortunate to bump into An Taoiseach Bertie Ahern and the Minister for Communications, Dermot Ahern. Shane left them in no doubt as to the determination of the Action Group and the people of Clonakilty to resist the attempts to downgrade the Post Office.
